F.A.Q.

Quick answers to the questions asked most often about attending, buying and selling at gun shows.

Do I need a background check to buy at a gun show?

Every firearm sold by a licensed dealer at a gun show goes through the same federal background check as a sale in a store. Private sales between residents of the same state follow state law, which varies. The Gun Show Laws page covers the details.

Can I bring my own gun to a gun show?

Most shows allow it for sale or trade, but promoters check them at the door, unload them and zip-tie the action. Many shows do not allow loaded carry inside the hall, so check the promoter rules before you go.

How much does it cost to get in?

Most local shows charge a modest admission at the door, with discounts for children, veterans and law enforcement, and many offer a weekend pass. Large national shows cost more, and the SHOT Show is a trade-only event, open to industry members and media rather than the general public.

Should I bring cash?

Yes. Many private sellers, collectors and smaller vendors work in cash, and having it on hand helps when negotiating. Most dealers take cards too.

Can prices be negotiated?

Often, especially on used guns, surplus and collectibles, and especially late on the last day of a show. New guns at dealer tables usually have less room.

What else is sold besides guns?

Ammunition, reloading supplies, knives, optics, holsters, militaria, books, survival gear and plenty of jerky. At some shows firearms fill fewer than half the tables.

Which gun shows are the biggest?

The Wanenmacher Tulsa Arms Show is billed as the largest in the world. The SHOT Show is the largest industry trade show, and the NRA Annual Meeting is among the largest open to the public. See Major Gun Shows in the USA.

How do I get my show reviewed or listed?

Promoters can reach the network through the Contact Us page, and the Gun Show Promoters page lists promoters by region.
