The spring 2010 Big Sandy Machine Gun Shoot took the Gun Websites crew to the desert outside Wikieup, Arizona, for what is billed as the largest machine gun shoot in the world. The crew filmed the full auto firing line by day, toured some of the machine guns on display, and stayed for the night shoot, when tracers and pyrotechnics light up the hills.
Big Sandy Machine Gun Shoot 2010 History
The Big Sandy Shoot is held twice a year, in the spring and fall, on a natural range in a dry wash near Wikieup in western Arizona, about two hours northwest of Phoenix. Owners of legally registered machine guns, cannons and destructive devices line up along the firing line, and spectators can watch, shop the vendor row and, in many cases, rent time on a machine gun.
Because the supply of transferable machine guns was frozen in 1986, every gun on the line is a piece of history as much as a firearm, and Big Sandy is one of the few places where so many of them can be seen and heard in one place.

Big Sandy is the opposite of a trade show. Nothing on the line is new, nothing is for sale at the counter price, and the whole point is to shoot. For a camera crew it is the best place in the country to show what full auto actually looks and sounds like, from World War II era belt feds to drum fed submachine guns.

The day started with a walk down the line and a tour of some of the machine guns on display, and ended after dark with the night shoot, where tracer fire and targets loaded with pyrotechnics turn the hillside into a light show.
